Sometimes we think that we know what we want.
Until we are asked. Until we actually have to describe it and then we realize that we aren’t actually clear on what we want.
If I asked you to tell me what you want, in all areas of your life, what would you say?
Clarity is the base foundation of everything we do.
And lack of clarity can show up everywhere.
It shows up in our work; when we have so much to do but we just sit there, overwhelmed and paralyzed not sure how to start and move forward.
It shows up in our relationships; whether or not to stay in a relationship, what changes should or could be made or what you’re willing to compromise on.
It shows up in our goals; or maybe you are clear on your goals, but don’t know where to start or how to get there.
It shows up in our careers; maybe you’re not happy in your profession and you want something else, you just are unclear as to what that is or how to get there.
Clarity and lack of clarity is the one thing that is weaved throughout everything we do in life.
Sometimes, having a lack of clarity makes us feel so out of control or anxious that we either avoid it and don’t want to figure it out, or we just start to do things randomly. It’s like we are shooting that arrow in all random directions...just hoping that it will eventually hit the bullseye...hoping that at some point, it’ll work out and you’ll be happy.
Does that not sound ridiculous?
You need to know clearly what you’re pointing at. So that you can use your time and energy in a way that’s strategic, productive and effective. That’s where clarity comes in.
It helps you point that arrow in the correct direction.
You start with clarity, you add in action and some courage and hopefully you’ll get the result you’re hoping for, And if you don’t, it’s okay. Just because you get clear doesn’t mean you’re going to be successful. A lot of hard work still has to happen.
But it’s okay; because you weren’t just randomly shooting things in the air hoping for something to work out. If you were clear and strategic with your choices, you will always gain a learning...if you are open to that.
Embrace the struggle and stop resisting; start surrendering to the process of everything. It doesn’t have to be chaotic or a fight or feel like you’re dreading every step and viewing your failures as the be all-end all of everything. You can enjoy the process - even the things that don’t feel good.
Embrace it.
Why? Because what we resist, persists. When you embrace it, at least you open yourself up to that learning.
Here’s the other thing about clarity.
Even when we start to gain some clarity in certain areas, it keeps showing up. Seeking clarity never just ends; it’s not like you reach a place where you have some clarity and you’re just good. There is no end point where all of a sudden you’re clear and that’s it.
Because as you gain more clarity, you gain more knowledge.
With that knowledge, you start to make different choices. Changes start to happen in your life. And with those changes, new clarity is required. Clarity is the one thing that follows us everywhere...if you’re open to it. Because when you get more clear and you start to make those shifts towards the things you want, then you feel good, you gain competence and that increases your confidence.
Brendon Burchard talks about the “Confidence Competence Loop”. The more confidence you gain, the higher level of competence you are able to achieve which in turn increases your confidence and it keeps raising yourself up. Each time feeling better, stronger and more clear. Every new level that you hit requires more clarity. Embrace that you’re always going to need another level of clarity to get to that next level. The work when it comes to clarity never ends.
So - how do you start to get more clarity in your life?
Start with journaling. I created a free journaling guide to help you get started. You can download it here → Clarity Journal. I created it because journaling is hard. But it’s such an essential starting place. It’s not journaling just for the sake of journaling. Everything that we do is strategic. It’s about asking yourself and reflecting on the right questions. In doing so, we are creating more information so that you have the ability to move forward and make different choices based on the information you are bringing in. Journaling, which requires thinking, reflecting and observation of your life, is one of the strongest skills and habits you can incorporate into your life.
So - do you actually know what you want?
Where are you stuck? Where are you not clear?
What area of your life are feeling most uncertain, unclear and without direction?
Are you ready to start digging into those areas, so that you can make some changes?
If the answer is yes, then my next question to you is “what are you waiting for?”
Because every day that passes you by is a day you’ve taken for granted.
What are you waiting for? Start by gaining some clarity.
